Between-Season Capsule

Last updated 2026-06-15

The between-season capsule acknowledges what seasonal capsule wardrobes often ignore: the four to six weeks between seasons when weather is genuinely unpredictable and your main seasonal wardrobe is either too heavy or too light. Rather than trying to force summer clothes to work in September or pulling out winter coats in October, the between-season capsule creates a dedicated mini wardrobe for the transition. It typically contains 8 to 12 pieces: lightweight layers, medium-weight tops, versatile bottoms that work across temperatures, and shoes that bridge seasons. The capsule is designed to pair with a few pieces from your outgoing season, extending their life, and a few from your incoming season, easing the transition. It lives as a separate grouping in your closet for four to six weeks, then dissolves back into your main wardrobe.

Ben used to dread October — too warm for his winter clothes, too cold for summer. He built a between-season capsule: two long-sleeve tees, one lightweight merino sweater, one unlined chino jacket, two pairs of medium-weight chinos, one pair of dark jeans, a scarf, and ankle boots. This 9-piece set carried him through five weeks of 45-to-70-degree days, pairing with his summer button-downs early in the transition and his winter sweaters later. He photographed all combinations in TRY and reused the same capsule the following year with minor swaps.

Questions, answered.

How long should I use a between-season capsule?

Four to six weeks is typical for most climates. The capsule fills the gap between when your current-season wardrobe stops working and when your next-season wardrobe takes over. In temperate climates with gradual transitions, you might use it for six weeks. In climates with sharp seasonal shifts, three to four weeks is often enough. Once you consistently reach for your next-season wardrobe instead of the capsule, the transition is over.

Do I need separate capsules for spring and fall?

Not necessarily — many people use the same between-season capsule for both transitions because the temperature ranges are similar. A 55-to-70-degree capsule works for both late March through April and late September through October in many climates. The main difference is aesthetic — you might swap a cream scarf for an olive one or switch from canvas sneakers to suede boots. The structural pieces — mid-weight layers and versatile bottoms — work identically in both directions.

Should I buy specific pieces for my between-season capsule?

Most between-season capsules can be assembled from pieces you already own across both seasonal wardrobes. A lightweight sweater from your winter set plus cotton pants from your summer set creates a transition outfit. Only buy new pieces if you identify a genuine gap — typically a medium-weight layer or transitional shoes. The goal is not to create a third wardrobe but to strategically combine pieces from your existing two.
