What is Chiffon?

Last updated 2026-06-08

Chiffon is a lightweight, sheer fabric woven from twisted yarns that create its characteristic slightly rough, sandy texture. Despite feeling delicate, the twist of the yarns gives chiffon more body than other sheer fabrics — it holds its shape in ruffles and layers rather than collapsing flat. This combination of transparency, lightness, and structural hold makes chiffon one of the most important fabrics in occasion dressing and feminine styling. Chiffon can be made from silk (the most luxurious and expensive), polyester (the most common and affordable), nylon, or rayon. Silk chiffon has a softer hand and more refined drape but is delicate and requires dry cleaning. Polyester chiffon is more durable, machine-washable, and wrinkle-resistant — making it the practical choice for most garments. The visual difference between silk and polyester chiffon is subtle in solid colors but more noticeable in prints, where silk's softer drape creates more fluid movement. In fashion, chiffon appears most often in blouses, maxi dresses, midi skirts, evening gowns, scarves, and overlays. A chiffon blouse tucked into tailored trousers is a classic work-to-dinner outfit. A chiffon maxi dress is a go-to for summer weddings and garden parties. Chiffon overlays (a sheer chiffon layer over an opaque lining) create depth and movement in formal dresses without adding weight. The sheerness of chiffon requires thoughtful styling. Most chiffon garments have built-in linings, but if yours doesn't, pair it with a nude or color-matched camisole underneath. This is where owning a good camisole collection pays off — three camisoles in black, white, and nude cover virtually every chiffon pairing you'll need.

Questions, answered.

Is chiffon comfortable to wear in hot weather?

Chiffon is one of the best fabrics for warm weather. Its lightweight, breathable construction allows air circulation, and the sheerness means less fabric sits against your skin. Silk chiffon breathes the best. Polyester chiffon can trap some heat but is still cooler than most structured fabrics. For peak summer comfort, choose chiffon in lighter colors — dark chiffon absorbs more heat.

How do I care for chiffon garments?

Silk chiffon should be dry cleaned or hand-washed in cold water with a gentle detergent. Polyester chiffon can be machine-washed on a delicate cycle in a mesh bag. Always air-dry chiffon — never put it in the dryer. To remove wrinkles, use a steamer rather than an iron (or hold the iron on the lowest setting with a pressing cloth between the iron and fabric). Chiffon snags easily, so store it away from jewelry, zippers, and rough surfaces.

Can I wear chiffon casually?

Yes — pair a chiffon top with jeans and flat sandals to dress it down. The contrast between the delicate fabric and casual denim creates an effortless-chic look. Avoid wearing chiffon with athletic shoes or very casual pieces like sweatpants — the mismatch reads as confused rather than intentional.
