What is a Closet Cleanout?

Last updated 2026-04-13

A closet cleanout is a structured process of going through everything you own, evaluating each piece, and removing items that no longer serve you—whether they don't fit, aren't worn, or don't match your current style. It is the first step toward a more functional wardrobe. Unlike a quick purge, a proper cleanout is methodical. You pull everything out, sort by category (tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, shoes, accessories), and evaluate each piece on fit, condition, frequency of wear, and how it fits your current lifestyle. Items you remove can be donated, sold, recycled, or stored seasonally. The goal is not to own less for its own sake, but to end up with a closet where every piece earns its spot.

Empty your entire closet onto the bed. Sort into keep, donate, sell, and repair piles. Try on anything you are unsure about. Rehang only the pieces you would buy again today.

How TRY helps

TRY suggests outfit combinations from the clothes you already own. Upload your wardrobe, pick an occasion, and get ideas that fit your style—including staples and formulas that work.

Questions, answered.

How often should I do a closet cleanout?

A thorough cleanout once or twice a year (typically at season changes) is enough. Between cleanouts, use the one-in-one-out rule to maintain the balance.

What should I do with the clothes I remove?

Donate wearable items to charity, sell quality pieces on resale platforms, recycle damaged items through textile recycling programs, and store seasonal pieces if you plan to wear them again. Avoid just throwing everything in the trash.
