Quality signals are the language garments speak for those who know how to read them. Unlike price tags, brand names, or marketing copy, quality signals are physical properties of the garment itself — things you can see, touch, and test in a fitting room. Learning to read them turns you from a passive consumer who relies on price as a quality proxy into an informed buyer who can find excellent construction at every price point and avoid paying premium prices for mediocre goods. Fabric quality signals come first because fabric is the single largest determinant of how a garment looks, feels, and ages. Natural fibers — cotton, wool, linen, silk — generally age better than synthetics, developing character rather than deteriorating. But quality varies enormously within each fiber type. High-quality cotton feels dense and smooth with a subtle luster; low-quality cotton feels thin and rough. Quality wool has a soft hand and springs back when compressed; cheap wool feels scratchy and flat. For blends, the ratio matters — a 70/30 wool-polyester blend will behave much closer to pure wool than a 30/70 blend. Construction signals are the second category. The stitch count should be tight and even: roughly 10-12 stitches per inch for wovens, with no skipped stitches or puckering. At stress points (underarms, crotch, shoulder seams), look for reinforcement — bartacking, double stitching, or gussets. Buttons should be attached with a thread shank and ideally have a reinforcement button on the inside. Finishing signals reveal how much care went into the final stages of production. Pattern matching at seams — stripes, plaids, or prints that align across side seams and center back — requires additional fabric and skilled labor, signaling a manufacturer committed to quality. Properly pressed and flat-lying collars, evenly weighted hems, smooth zipper installations, and clean buttonholes are all finishing details that separate quality from mediocrity. Even the hang tag and care label placement can signal quality — neatly sewn, properly positioned labels suggest attention to detail throughout the production process. The cumulative effect of reading quality signals is significant over time. A wardrobe built from quality-signal-verified purchases lasts longer, looks better, and costs less per wear than one built from impulse buys evaluated only by appearance on the hanger. The few minutes spent checking signals before each purchase pay for themselves many times over in garment longevity and satisfaction.
