What is a Pea Coat?

Last updated 2026-05-29

The pea coat's origins trace to Dutch and European naval uniforms of the 18th century — 'pij' was a type of rough wool fabric in Dutch. The U.S. Navy adopted the style and it became standard-issue outerwear, valued for its warmth, durability, and freedom of movement on deck. After World War II, surplus pea coats flooded civilian markets and the style became a fashion staple. Classic pea coat construction uses heavy Melton wool — a tightly woven, felted fabric that's naturally wind and water-resistant. The double-breasted front provides an extra layer of insulation across the chest. The broad lapels can be turned up to protect the neck. Anchor-embossed buttons are a traditional detail, though modern versions use varied button styles. The pea coat's proportions — hip length, fitted through the waist, with structured shoulders — make it one of the most flattering coat silhouettes. It works with jeans, chinos, trousers, dresses, and skirts. Navy is the traditional color and remains the most popular, but charcoal, camel, and black are equally versatile. A quality wool pea coat is a worthwhile cold-weather investment that never goes out of style.

Questions, answered.

How should a pea coat fit?

A pea coat should fit close through the body with enough room to layer a sweater underneath — but not so much room that it looks boxy. The shoulders should align with your natural shoulders. It should button comfortably without pulling. The length should hit around mid-hip. You want it to feel structured and intentional, not oversized.

What do you wear under a pea coat?

Almost anything. The pea coat's versatility is its greatest strength. Turtlenecks, crewneck sweaters, button-down shirts, hoodies, flannel shirts — all work. For dressier occasions, a sport coat or blazer can fit under a properly sized pea coat. In milder weather, a simple t-shirt is fine.

Is a pea coat warm enough for winter?

A quality Melton wool pea coat is genuinely warm — the thick wool and double-breasted construction provide significant insulation. For most winter conditions above 15°F (-10°C), a pea coat over a sweater is sufficient. For extreme cold, you may want a longer coat that covers more of your body, or add a scarf and warm layers underneath.

What is the difference between a pea coat and an overcoat?

Length and formality. A pea coat is short (hip-length), double-breasted, and works casually. An overcoat is longer (mid-thigh to knee), can be single or double-breasted, and is traditionally more formal. Pea coats have a military/naval heritage; overcoats have a civilian/business heritage. Both are wool outerwear staples.
