What is a Platform Espadrille?

Last updated 2026-06-09

Platform espadrilles take the classic rope-soled shoe — rooted in the Pyrenees region and popularized by Yves Saint Laurent in the 1970s — and elevate it, literally. The jute-wrapped platform creates height without the pitch of a traditional heel, meaning your foot stays relatively flat while gaining significant visual elongation. This makes platform espadrilles one of the few shoe categories that combine noticeable height gain with genuine walkability. The platform espadrille works so well in summer wardrobes because the jute material reads as inherently warm-weather and vacation-adjacent. Where a leather platform might feel too heavy for July, a jute-wrapped platform feels seasonal and appropriate. The most common construction features a canvas, linen, or leather upper with an ankle tie, though slip-on and slingback versions exist for easier on-and-off. Ankle-tie espadrilles add a styling detail that draws the eye to the ankle and calf, which is why they pair so well with cropped pants and midi hemlines. Color-wise, natural jute with a neutral canvas upper (black, navy, cream, tan) is the most versatile platform espadrille. It functions as a summer alternative to heeled sandals across casual, smart-casual, and resort contexts. Bold-colored or patterned uppers make the shoe more of a statement piece but limit pairing options. For a single-pair investment, neutral is the smarter choice. TRY can show you which warm-weather outfits in your closet benefit from the height and silhouette change that platform espadrilles provide versus flat espadrilles or sandals.

Navy canvas ankle-tie platform espadrilles worn with a white linen midi dress and a woven crossbody bag create a polished Mediterranean look that adds three inches of height while feeling completely summer-appropriate.

Questions, answered.

Are platform espadrilles comfortable to walk in?

Generally yes, because the platform keeps your foot relatively flat rather than pitched at an angle like a traditional heel. The jute material also has some natural cushioning. The ankle-tie versions offer more support and stability than slip-ons. However, jute soles can become slippery on wet surfaces — avoid them on rainy days or near pools. For all-day wear, a platform height of 2-3 inches is more comfortable than 4 or more.

Can I get platform espadrilles wet?

Avoid it. Jute is a natural fiber that absorbs water, weakens when saturated, and can develop mildew if not dried properly. A light splash is fine, but do not submerge them or wear them in rain. If they do get wet, stuff with newspaper and air-dry away from direct heat. For beach days where water exposure is likely, opt for rubber-soled sandals instead and save the espadrilles for the boardwalk and restaurant.

When are platform espadrilles in season?

Late spring through early fall — roughly May through September in most climates. The jute material reads as distinctly warm-weather, so wearing platform espadrilles in November looks seasonally off even if the temperature allows it. Think of them as part of your summer shoe rotation alongside flat sandals, slides, and sneakers, stored away during cold months to preserve the jute sole.
