What is Recycled Polyester?

Last updated 2026-05-24

Recycled polyester (rPET) is polyester fiber made from post-consumer plastic — usually plastic bottles or discarded textiles. It diverts plastic waste from landfills and oceans and uses about 50% less energy than virgin polyester production. It is one of the most widely-adopted recycled materials in fashion. The environmental case is real but limited. rPET reduces virgin plastic demand and uses significantly less energy than new polyester, but it shares polyester's biggest flaws: microplastic shedding during washing, and difficulty being recycled again (most rPET is downcycled rather than truly closed-loop). It's a meaningful improvement over virgin polyester but not a fully sustainable solution. Common applications include activewear (Patagonia's Capilene, Adidas Parley collection), outerwear shells, swimwear, and athleisure. Look for Global Recycled Standard (GRS) or Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) certifications to verify recycled content. For the lowest microplastic impact, pair rPET garments with a microfiber-catching laundry bag and wash less frequently.

Mark bought a Patagonia jacket made from 100% recycled polyester sourced from plastic bottles. The construction quality was identical to virgin polyester jackets, with the added benefit of diverting roughly 30 plastic bottles from landfill per jacket.

How TRY helps

TRY suggests outfit combinations from the clothes you already own. Upload your wardrobe, pick an occasion, and get ideas that fit your style—including staples and formulas that work.

Questions, answered.

Is recycled polyester actually sustainable?

Better than virgin polyester, but not fully sustainable. It diverts plastic waste and uses less energy in production but still sheds microplastics during washing and is hard to recycle a second time. The most sustainable polyester is the one you already own and keep wearing.

Does recycled polyester perform differently than virgin?

No meaningful difference. Modern recycled polyester matches virgin polyester in durability, color retention, and performance characteristics. For most uses (jackets, athletic wear, accessories), the materials are functionally interchangeable.

How can I reduce microplastic shedding from rPET?

Use a microfiber catcher (Guppyfriend bag, Cora Ball) in the washing machine, wash less frequently, wash in cold water, and avoid the dryer when possible. These steps reduce microplastic release by 50% or more.
