What is a Smart Textile?

A smart textile is fabric engineered to perform functions beyond traditional clothing — including sensing the environment, generating electricity, changing color or temperature, or transmitting data. The technology can be embedded in the fiber itself, woven into the fabric, or integrated as electronic components. The category divides into three generations. Passive smart textiles sense the environment (moisture-wicking fabrics, UV-protective fibers). Active smart textiles react to inputs (color-changing fabrics, thermal-regulating fabrics). Very smart textiles process information and respond intelligently (biometric monitoring shirts, gesture-recognizing sleeves). Most mainstream products today are first or second generation; third-generation products are emerging in athletics and medical applications. The commercial reality is mixed. Smart textiles for athletic performance (Hexoskin biometric shirts, Athos compression wear) and medical monitoring (Owlet biometric onesies for babies) have viable markets. Consumer fashion smart textiles have been slower to commercialize — the cost premium versus traditional fabrics is significant, and washing/durability remain real challenges. Expect this to change through the late 2020s as the underlying technology matures.

Can smart textiles be washed normally?
