What is Vegan Leather?

Last updated 2026-05-24

Vegan leather is any leather-like material made without animal products. The category spans plastic-based options (polyurethane, PVC), recycled materials, and plant-based alternatives derived from pineapple leaves, apple skins, cactus, cork, or mycelium. The market has expanded substantially through 2026, driven by both ethical concerns and aesthetic acceptance — leading brands like Hermès, Stella McCartney, and Coach have released bags and shoes in mycelium-based and cactus-based vegan leathers. Search interest in vegan leather bags grew about 3,800 percent. The fastest-growing subcategory is bio-leather — materials grown from fungus or fermented organic matter that can biodegrade at end of life. The critical distinction is between 'vegan' and 'sustainable.' Polyurethane-based vegan leather is animal-free but petroleum-derived and difficult to recycle. Bio-leathers like Mylo (mycelium) and Desserto (cactus) are vegan and biodegradable but still in early-stage availability. PVC-based vegan leather is the least desirable option — animal-free but environmentally worse than chrome-tanned leather in most life-cycle analyses.

Mia replaced her chrome-tanned leather tote with a cactus-leather version from a Spanish brand. Two years in, the bag has softened naturally, shows minimal wear, and weighs less than the leather original — at a comparable price point.

Questions, answered.

Is vegan leather more sustainable than real leather?

It depends on the type. Plant-based and bio-leathers (mycelium, cactus, pineapple) typically have a lower environmental impact than chrome-tanned leather. PVC-based vegan leather is usually worse. The label 'vegan' alone is not a sustainability guarantee.

How long does vegan leather last?

Quality varies dramatically. Premium plant-based and bio-leathers can last 5 to 10 years with care. Lower-end PU and PVC vegan leathers may crack or peel within 2 to 3 years. Buy from brands that disclose materials and provide care guidance.

How can I tell what type of vegan leather a product is made from?

Check the product description for material specifics: PU, PVC, recycled polyester, cactus (Desserto), pineapple leaf (Piñatex), apple skin (AppleSkin), mushroom (Mylo), or cork. Brands that disclose specifics tend to be more transparent overall.
