Choosing your palette

Start with your base neutral — the color most of your pants, outerwear, and shoes will be. Black, navy, and charcoal are the most versatile. Add 1-2 lighter neutrals (white, cream, grey) and 1-2 accent colors that complement your skin tone and personal style.

Palette example: navy + white + grey + olive + dusty rose

Navy serves as the anchor for trousers, blazers, and a coat. White and grey provide tops and base layers. Olive and dusty rose appear as accent pieces — a jacket, a knit, a scarf. Every item in this palette coordinates with at least 3 others, creating 40+ outfit combinations from 20-25 pieces.

The outfit math

In a coordinated palette, 5 tops × 4 bottoms × 3 layers = 60 combinations. Without color coordination, the same number of pieces might yield only 10-15 working outfits because mismatched colors reduce compatibility. A capsule palette is the single highest-leverage wardrobe decision you can make.

Building your palette gradually

Do not overhaul your wardrobe overnight. Identify your target palette, then replace worn-out items with palette-aligned pieces over 6-12 months. Within a season, your closet will converge naturally. Start with the most visible category (outerwear and tops) and let less visible items (underwear, loungewear) lag.

Questions, answered.

Does a capsule palette have to be neutral?

No. A palette of burgundy, forest green, and mustard is perfectly valid — as long as the colors coordinate. The key is that every piece can pair with at least three others. Bolder palettes simply require more intentional shopping.

How do I add seasonal variety without breaking my palette?

Swap accent colors seasonally while keeping the base neutrals constant. Your navy/white/grey backbone stays year-round; swap dusty rose for rust in autumn, or olive for sky blue in summer. Two accent swaps are enough to refresh the feel without rebuilding the wardrobe.
