What is Eyelet Fabric?

Last updated 2026-06-02

Eyelet fabric gets its name from the small, reinforced holes ("eyelets") arranged in geometric or floral patterns across the surface. These perforations are typically created through embroidery or laser cutting, then finished with tight stitching that prevents unraveling and adds a decorative border around each hole. The fabric is most commonly cotton or cotton-blend, making it breathable and comfortable in heat. Eyelet is lighter and less ornate than lace but more detailed than plain cotton, which positions it as a versatile choice for summer wardrobes. It appears in dresses, skirts, blouses, shorts, and even structured pieces like blazers. Styling eyelet fabric follows a less-is-more approach. Because the texture is inherently decorative, it pairs best with solid colors and simple silhouettes. A fully eyelet outfit risks looking costume-like—one eyelet piece per outfit is the sweet spot. Undergarments matter: the holes reveal whatever is underneath, so a matching slip, nude undergarments, or a contrasting layer (like a bright camisole under a white eyelet top) are practical choices that also affect the overall look.

An eyelet cotton blouse with cap sleeves tucked into high-waisted denim shorts and espadrilles is a classic summer formula that works for farmers' markets, brunch, or casual outdoor events.

Questions, answered.

Does eyelet fabric require a lining?

Usually yes. Because the holes are see-through, most eyelet garments come with a built-in lining or are designed to be worn over a slip or camisole. Some people intentionally skip the lining for a more relaxed, layered look—especially at the beach.

Is eyelet the same as lace?

No. Lace is constructed by interlacing threads to form a pattern—the holes are part of the structure. Eyelet starts with solid fabric and adds holes after. Eyelet tends to be sturdier and less delicate than lace, which makes it more practical for everyday wear.

What colors does eyelet come in?

White and cream are traditional, but modern eyelet fabric comes in virtually every color. Black eyelet is popular for evening or transitional-season wear, while pastels like lavender, blush, and sky blue are common in spring and summer collections.
