What is a Henley Shirt?

Last updated 2026-05-18

Named after the English town of Henley-on-Thames where rowers wore them, the henley shirt occupies a unique spot in the wardrobe hierarchy — it is a tee-shirt upgrade that adds detail and polish without crossing into formal territory. The button placket creates a V-shaped opening at the neck that is inherently flattering on most body types, drawing the eye upward and creating a slimming line. In wardrobe building, henleys serve as an alternative to basic tees when you want a slightly more intentional look without reaching for a collared shirt. They layer well under jackets, cardigans, and open flannel shirts. Long-sleeve henleys are particularly useful in cooler months as a base layer that looks good on its own if you remove your outer layer. The most versatile henleys come in solid neutral colors — white, black, navy, grey, olive — in a slim-to-regular fit with a medium-weight cotton or cotton-blend fabric. Thermal or waffle-knit henleys add texture and warmth for fall and winter layering. For capsule wardrobes, two henleys (one light, one dark) replace four basic tees while offering more outfit versatility.

Jake replaced two of his plain tees with a navy and a grey henley. The subtle button placket means they look intentional under his leather jacket or on their own with jeans — slightly more polished than the crew-neck tees they replaced.

Questions, answered.

Should henley buttons be buttoned or unbuttoned?

Either works — it depends on the look you want. All buttons open creates a more relaxed, casual V-neckline. Top button closed with the rest open is the most common choice and looks intentional. All buttons closed creates a cleaner, more minimal look. There is no wrong answer; experiment based on the neckline exposure you prefer and whether you are layering anything over it.

Can I wear a henley to the office?

In casual or creative offices, absolutely — a fitted henley under a blazer creates a polished smart-casual look. In business-casual environments, a henley alone may be too casual but works well as a layering piece under a structured jacket or cardigan. In formal offices, a henley is too informal as a standalone top.

What is the difference between a henley and a polo?

A polo has a collar and a longer button placket. A henley is collarless with a shorter placket (typically 2-5 buttons). Polos read more preppy and sport-influenced. Henleys read more casual and utilitarian. Polos are generally considered more polished for business-casual settings; henleys are better for casual and creative environments.
