Video Interview Outfit Template

A template for looking professional on camera — solid colors, structured tops, and on-screen testing to nail the video interview dress code.

The on-camera formula

Solid mid-tone top (navy, grey, burgundy, forest green) + structured neckline (collar, crew neck, or blazer) + minimal accessories. The webcam crops to shoulders-up, so all your outfit investment goes into the top half.

Colors that work on screen

Mid-tones are your friend: navy reads as professional without being severe. Burgundy adds warmth. Grey is safe and neutral. Avoid stark white (washes out and glares), all-black (looks flat without studio lighting), and tiny patterns (create distracting moiré effects on screen).

The pre-call test

10 minutes before the interview, sit in your interview spot, turn on your camera, and check: does the color work with your background? Is the neckline flattering in the frame? Are there any distracting reflections from jewelry? Adjust now, not during the call.

Questions, answered.

Do I need a blazer for a video interview?

Not always, but it helps. A blazer immediately signals professionalism and creates structure in the camera frame. For casual companies (startups, creative agencies), a clean knit or collared shirt is fine.

Should I dress fully even though only the top shows?

Yes — dressing fully improves your posture, confidence, and psychological readiness. Plus, you never know when you might need to stand up unexpectedly.
