What is GOTS Certification?
Last updated 2026-05-24
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the leading sustainability certification for organic textiles. It covers the entire supply chain — from raw fiber to finished garment — verifying both ecological and social criteria, including organic farming, low-impact processing, fair labor practices, and chemical restrictions. GOTS-certified textiles must contain at least 70% organic natural fibers, with the highest tier ('organic') requiring 95% or more. The standard prohibits use of GMOs, heavy metals, formaldehyde, chlorine bleach, and many other chemicals. It also requires that all workers in the supply chain are paid fair wages and operate in safe conditions, making GOTS one of the few certifications that addresses both environmental and labor aspects. GOTS is widely considered the most credible textile certification available because it covers the full supply chain and is independently audited. Brands like Patagonia, Eileen Fisher, People Tree, Pact, Boody, and Organic Basics rely on GOTS to substantiate sustainability claims. The certification is also valued by consumers — products with GOTS labels can command price premiums of 20 to 50% over uncertified alternatives.
When Yara looked for sustainable basics, she ignored vague 'eco' labels and looked specifically for GOTS certification. The Pact and Organic Basics tees she bought were GOTS-certified, confirming the organic claim from field to finished product. Other brands' 'organic' labels turned out to mean as little as 10% organic content.

Questions, answered.
What's the difference between GOTS and OEKO-TEX?
GOTS covers the entire supply chain and verifies both environmental and social criteria. OEKO-TEX primarily certifies that the finished textile is free from harmful substances, without verifying farming or labor practices. GOTS is more comprehensive; OEKO-TEX is more focused.
Does GOTS certification cost more for brands?
Yes — certification and ongoing compliance audits add cost to production. This is why GOTS-certified products typically cost 20 to 50% more than uncertified alternatives. The premium funds verification that the sustainability claims are real.
Are all organic fashion brands GOTS-certified?
No. Some brands use organic cotton without certification, which means the organic claim cannot be independently verified. For high-confidence sustainability, GOTS certification is the safer signal.
