What is Houndstooth?

Last updated 2026-05-29

Houndstooth (also called hound's tooth check or pied-de-poule in French) originated in the Scottish Lowlands as a woven twill pattern. The distinctive four-pointed star shapes are created by alternating light and dark threads in a specific twill sequence. It gained widespread fashion popularity in the early 20th century and has remained a perennial classic ever since. The scale of the pattern dramatically changes how it reads. Micro-houndstooth (also called puppytooth) features tiny checks that look almost like a textured solid from a distance — it's subtle and very office-appropriate. Standard houndstooth is bolder and more recognizable. Oversized houndstooth makes a strong graphic statement and works best in accessories or single statement pieces. Houndstooth's power is in its pattern-mixing versatility. Because it reads as a textured neutral (especially in black and white), it pairs surprisingly well with other patterns — stripes, solid knits, and even subtle plaids. The key is keeping the rest of the outfit relatively simple and letting the houndstooth piece be the visual anchor.

Questions, answered.

Is houndstooth a pattern or a fabric?

Houndstooth is a pattern, not a fabric. It can be woven into wool, cotton, polyester, or any other textile. The defining feature is the distinctive broken-check design with its pointed, tooth-like shapes. It's most traditionally associated with wool twill but appears across many fabric types.

How do you wear houndstooth without looking dated?

Keep it to one houndstooth piece per outfit. Pair it with modern, minimal basics — a houndstooth blazer with a plain tee and jeans, or a houndstooth coat over a monochrome outfit. Choose contemporary cuts and silhouettes rather than boxy vintage shapes. Mixing houndstooth with casual pieces keeps it feeling current.

What colors does houndstooth come in?

Black and white is the classic, but houndstooth appears in virtually any two-color combination. Navy and cream, brown and tan, red and black, and grey and white are all common. Some contemporary versions use three or more colors. The pattern works in both high-contrast and tonal combinations.

What is the difference between houndstooth and plaid?

They're completely different patterns. Houndstooth features broken checks with pointed, angular shapes created by a specific twill weave. Plaid consists of intersecting horizontal and vertical stripes forming a grid of rectangles. Houndstooth is always two-toned at its core; plaid can use many colors.
